NEW YORK (AP) — Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination "on behalf of everyone whose story could only be written in the greatest nation on Earth." America, Barack Obama thundered, "is ready for a better story." JD Vance insisted that the Biden administration "is not the end of our story," and Donald Trump called on fellow Republicans to "write our own thrilling chapter of the American story."

6. Kamala Harris with Beyoncé? Yes, but the star singer was only heard through loudspeakers -

Kamala Harris introduced herself to the country she hopes to lead in the climactic moment of the Democratic national convention on Thursday — and despite chatter about potential mystery guests, Beyoncé's only appearance was over the loudspeakers.

7. Thompson Burton welcomes 2 attorneys -

Thompson Burton has welcomed Brian T. Boyd as a partner and Johnathan E. Billings as an associate.

Boyd, who will start a tax practice at Thompson Burton, is a business litigation attorney based in the firm’s Franklin office. He earned an L.L.M at Georgetown University Law Center and his J.D. At Cumberland School of Law, Samford University. Boyd is a University of Tennessee, Chattanooga graduate with a degree in history.

But in an ominous sign for the president, a leading ally publicly suggested a way that the party might choose someone else.

9. Stranch, Jennings & Garvey welcomes 2 new Attorneys -

R. Christopher Gilreath and Grayson Wells have joined the Nashville law firm of Stranch, Jennings & Garvey, PLLC.

Gilreath has joined the firm as a member and co-leads SJ&G’s personal injury practice group. He previously served as the managing attorney of the Memphis office of Gilreath & Associates.

11. VU poll: Nashville ‘back on the right track,’ residents largely unified -

A majority (53%) of Nashvillians say the city is on the right track, which represents a nine-point increase from last year, the 2024 Vanderbilt Poll–Nashville poll has found. It is the first time in four years the measure has increased.

12. Canadian town mourns 'devastating loss' of family killed in Nashville plane crash -

NASHVILLE (AP) — Police in Tennessee identified those killed in a fiery small plane crash next to Interstate 40 on Monday as a family of five from Canada.

The pilot was Victor Dotsenko, 43, and the passengers were his wife Rimma, 39, and their three children, David, 12, Adam, 10, and Emma, 7, Metro Nashville Police said in a news release.

15. GOP gun control bills? Don’t count on any sticking -

Wonder of wonders, a Republican legislator pre-filed a bill that qualifies as gun control. Or gun safety. Gun good sense, let’s call it.

The bill, sponsored by Adam Lowe, a state senator from Calhoun, would render someone convicted of felony firearm theft permanently ineligible to buy a firearm in Tennessee. The theory, I suppose, is that a bad guy with a gun is ipso facto not a good guy with a gun.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Former President Donald Trump joked about his legal challenges while campaigning in eastern Iowa on Tuesday night, just hours after announcing he'd received a target letter in the Justice Department's investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

18. Lanquist takes office as TBA president-elect -

Nashville attorney Edward D. Lanquist Jr. is now president-elect of the Tennessee Bar Association. Lanquist will advance to the presidency in 2024.

Lanquist has been active in the TBA and other legal and community organizations for many years, serving most recently as the TBA’s general counsel. He is on the faculty of the Nashville School of Law, is a past president of the Nashville Bar Association and past president of the Tennessee Intellectual Property Association. He holds engineering and law degrees from the University of Tennessee is a shareholder in the Nashville office of Baker Donelson.

19. VU poll: Nashvillians still say city on wrong track; Cooper at 59% approval -

For the second consecutive year, the Vanderbilt Poll-Nashville shows more than half of respondents believe the city is on the wrong track.

From the start of the Nashville poll, in 2015, until 2021, Nashvillians viewed the city as on the right track. The current trend is amplified by a plurality of respondents indicating the growth of the city is making their quality of life worse, rather than better or having no effect.

20. Mario, Mariah, Madonna added to National Recording Registry -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mario, Madonna and Mariah have entered the national audio canon.

Madonna's star-making 1984 album "Like a Virgin," Mariah Carey's 1994 holiday perennial "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and the original 1985 theme from Super Mario Bros. are now in the U.S. National Recording Registry as part of "the defining sounds of the nation's history and culture," the Library of Congress announced Wednesday.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The mottled bright green leaves of a pothos plant stood out against the flashy expanse of electric vehicles and smart products at the CES tech show in Las Vegas this year. This particular version of the familiar houseplant was bioengineered to remove 30 times the amount of indoor air pollutants of a typical house plant, according to Neoplants, the Paris-based company that created it.

26. State sees new stadium as money maker -

Two point one BILLION dollars. It’s a staggering number … a $2.1 followed by nine zeros. That’s the proposed agreement between Mayor John Cooper and the Titans to build a 17,000-square-foot, 60,000-seat enclosed stadium on the East Bank of the Cumberland River that – if approved by both the Metro Sports Authority and Metro Council next spring – would be the largest public/private project in Nashville history.

48. WHAT TO WATCH: Democrats open a new kind of convention -

ATLANTA (AP) — The Democratic Party will convene, sort of, amid a pandemic that has upended the usual pomp-and-circumstance of presidential nominating conventions.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez will be in Milwaukee, which he'd chosen as the 2020 convention host city. But presidential candidate Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, won't be. Nor will the 57 state and territorial delegations, party activists and media hordes that would have filled a downtown arena to see Biden and Harris nominated to take on President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in November.

84. Small plane flips over at Nashville airport during landing -

NASHVILLE (AP) — A small aircraft with one person on board flipped over during a rough landing at a Nashville airport.

A statement from the Metropolitan Airport Authority Department of Public Safety says the single engine Cessna 172 had a "mishap during landing, causing the aircraft to flip over" at the John C. Tune Airport. The runway was closed and flights were halted until the aircraft was removed.

Kurt Winstead, a founding member of the Nashville law firm Rudy Winstead Turner, PLLC, has been promoted to brigadier general in the Tennessee National Guard.

Winstead began his career with the Tennessee National Guard in 1990 when he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the Judge Advocate General Corp. His first assignment was as the judge advocate general for the 194th Engineer Brigade, now headquartered in Jackson. Throughout his more than 26 years of service, Winstead has served in numerous assignments culminating as the senior staff judge advocate at the Joint Force Headquarters in Nashville.
