Commercial real estate veteran Tom Frye, who spent the last 14 years as managing director of CBRE before retiring last year, has joined Baker Storey McDonald Properties, Inc.

Baker Storey McDonald focuses in retail and restaurants. Clients include Pier One, Old Navy, and Michaels, and grocery chain Sprouts. Frye’s focus will be uncovering development opportunities as well as urban retail; capitalizing on the ground floor spaces available in many of the new office and apartment buildings.

10. Tony Giarratana: Having fun, taking risks, reshaping Nashville's skyline -

Nashville’s skyline has barely changed since 2008, the year Pinnacle Tower was completed. That’s too long for Tony Giarratana.

The developer who built downtown’s first high-rise apartment building – the Cumberland – and the first condominium tower – the Viridian – had announced plans to launch a half-dozen new projects in the downtown, SoBro and Midtown districts. Together, those projects have a value of at least $500 million.

Two and a-half years after flooding devastated the city, Nashville’s changing relationship with the Cumberland River is visible on the east bank, where children play in a park that, as recently as the 1980s, was an industrial site where barges were constructed and launched.

The project made for some splashy headlines when was announced last year. The plan is for 1.5 million square feet of permanent showrooms, temporary exhibition space, education and training facilities, as well as leased space for health care-related companies to showcase their offerings.

16. TVA increasing electric rates June 1 -

Nashville residents and businesses already coping with rising prices at the gas pump are about to get another energy shock – higher electricity prices this summer.

TVA is raising its rates during the months when demand for power is at its highest, and Nashville Electric Service is passing along the new seasonal rate to its 320,000 residential customers and 33,000 business customers. Another 6,500 large commercial customers have a separate rate structure.

18. 'Ideally situated' for high-end shoppers -

It’s usually bad for a shopping mall when stores don’t renew leases and close their doors. It’s even worse when one of them is a beloved institution like Davis-Kidd Booksellers. But for the Mall at Green Hills, it’s a sign that times are good and getting better.
