BRENTWOOD (AP) — A school system in Tennessee is changing how it teaches about slavery and the history of black people in the United States.

The Tennessean reports the changes set to roll out in August for Williamson County Schools comes as the district is being criticized for homework assignments about slavery.

8. Tennessee school board: Charged Williamson superintendent can work -

FRANKLIN (AP) — A superintendent in Tennessee who is charged with assault in an encounter with a student will not be asked by the school board to take a leave of absence or end his contract.

The Tennessean reports the Williamson County education board voted unanimously Monday to support a statement expressing confidence in county schools superintendent Mike Looney to continue working pending the charge's resolution. Every board member reviewed security video of the encounter.

9. Williamson superintendent charged with assault in student emergency -

FRANKLIN (AP) — A schools superintendent in Tennessee has been charged with assault in connection with an encounter with a high school student.

Franklin police said in a statement that Franklin High School staff, officers, paramedics and a student's mother were working to transport the girl to the hospital for a reported psychological emergency Tuesday when Williamson County Schools Superintendent Mike Looney "abruptly entered," grabbed the student and forced her out of the school to his vehicle.

The Tennessee Titans are holding out hope that Marcus Mariota’s right knee injury, sustained in Sunday’s loss to the Patriots, won’t be season-ending.

FRANKLIN (AP) — The American Civil Liberties Union in Tennessee is urging school board members in Williamson County not to add prayers to meetings.

A statement from ACLU of Tennessee Executive Director Hedy Weinberg says the proposal "not only undermines the students' own religious freedom, it's unconstitutional."

Under the state's new teacher evaluation system, observations by principals make up half of their scores, but a first glimpse at those observation scores shows they are all over the map.

An open records request from The Tennessean found that in Murfreesboro City Schools, for example, nearly half of the teachers were given a top score of five, while in Fayette County, only one percent earned the top rating (http://tnne.ws/z2Soie).
