Appellate judge appointed to Tennessee Supreme Court -

NASHVILLE (AP) - Republican Gov. Bill Haslam on Thursday named Criminal Appeals Judge Jeff Bivins to fill an upcoming vacancy on the Tennessee Supreme Court bench.
Bivins, 53, will replace Justice Bill Koch, who is retiring in July to become dean of the Nashville School of Law.

NASHVILLE (AP) — The Governor's Commission for Judicial Appointments is now taking applications to fill an upcoming vacancy on the state Supreme Court.
Justice Bill Koch has announced he is retiring on July 15 to become dean of the Nashville School of Law. Candidates from Middle or West Tennessee can apply through Feb. 21. Koch has served on the state's highest court since 2007.

With all the enviable perks that justices on the state Supreme Court earn, it's no wonder Gov. Bill Haslam is at a loss to explain why only five people applied for the seat being vacated by retiring Justice Janice Holden.

NASHVILLE (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam has been presented with a slate of three finalists for an upcoming vacancy on the state Court of Appeals.
The Governor's Commission on Judicial Appointments selected Memphis Chancellor Kenny W. Armstrong and attorneys Brandon O. Gibson of Jackson and Dorothy J. Pounders of Memphis from among the six applicants.

NASHVILLE (AP) - The application process for upcoming judicial vacancies on two Tennessee courts is underway again after Gov. Bill Haslam created a new panel to vet applicants.
Haslam last week signed an executive order creating the Governor's Commission for Judicial Appointments. It largely mirrors the state's Judicial Nominating Commission, which lawmakers allowed to expire in June.

NASHVILLE (AP) — The state Supreme Court has upheld a death sentence for a Memphis-area man in a 3-2 decision.
The state's highest court agreed unanimously that Corinio Pruitt was guilty of the 2005 murder of 79-year-old Lawrence Guidroz, who died a day after he was thrown to the ground by Pruitt in the process of stealing his car outside an Apple Market.

NASHVILLE (AP) - Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Janice M. Holder says she's retiring at the end of her current term.
Holder, the first woman to serve as the high court's chief justice, announced on Wednesday that Aug. 31, 2014, will be her last day.
