1. How Project 2025's rightward vision became a flashpoint in this year's election -

WASHINGTON (AP) — For the past year, Project 2025 has endured as a persistent force in the presidential election, its far-right proposals deployed by Democrats as shorthand for what Donald Trump would potentially do with a second term at the White House.

2. Veteran artists fill Baker’s AmericanaFest wish list -

We asked seasoned AmericanaFest attendee Cary Baker for a handful of performances he was looking forward to during the packed conference and performance schedule.

Baker admits his list includes primarily established artists – “I’m not really the go-to for rookie talent, although I am hoping to serendipitously trip upon one or two good ones once I get there,” he says – but it’s as a good a place as any to start making one’s flight plan for the week.

3. It's not just Harris and Trump who have a lot at stake in next week's debate. ABC News does, too -

NEW YORK (AP) — Hours after ABC News released the rules for next Tuesday's presidential debate, resolving a final dispute in Donald Trump's favor, the former president was on the attack — against ABC News.

4. Harris has a daunting to-do list as she starts up a presidential campaign -

WASHINGTON (AP) — It's a daunting to-do list. Vice President Kamala Harris suddenly needs to whip up a presidential campaign almost from scratch.

It's a process that usually takes months, even years. Harris has only about two months before early voting starts. And, of course, nothing is guaranteed, despite her getting the endorsement of President Joe Biden — and significant pieces of his campaign — after he exited the race on Sunday.

5. A Black medic wounded on D-Day saved dozens of lives. He's finally being posthumously honored -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Waverly Woodson Jr., a medic who was part of the only Black combat unit to take part in the D-Day invasion of France during World War II, is being posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in recognition of the heroism and determination he showed treating troops under heavy enemy fire.

6. Has Israel followed the law in its war in Gaza? The US is due to render a first-of-its-kind verdict -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Facing heat over its military support for Israel's war, the Biden administration is due to deliver a first-of-its-kind formal verdict this week on whether the airstrikes on Gaza and restrictions on delivery of aid have violated international and U.S. laws designed to spare civilians from the worst horrors of war.

7. A congressman wanted to understand AI. So he went back to a college classroom to learn -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Don Beyer's car dealerships were among the first in the U.S. to set up a website. As a representative, the Virginia Democrat leads a bipartisan group focused on promoting fusion energy. He reads books about geometry for fun.

8. Biden promotes 'life-changing' student loan relief in Wisconsin as he rallies younger voters -

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — President Joe Biden said Monday that college graduates would see "life-changing" relief from his new plan to ease debt burdens for more than 30 million borrowers, the latest attempt by the Democratic president to make good on a campaign promise that could buoy his standing with young voters.

9. Democrats embrace tougher border enforcement, seeing Trump's demolition of deal as a 'gift' -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate's border proposal was one of the toughest bipartisan bills to emerge on the issue in decades. Yet it quickly collapsed when Republicans — galvanized by Donald Trump, the likely Republican presidential nominee — rejected the compromise as insufficient.

10. Senators reach a deal on border policy bill. Now it faces an uphill fight to passage -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate negotiators on Friday reached a deal on a proposal to overhaul the asylum system at the U.S. border with Mexico, clearing the way for Democratic and Republican Senate leaders to begin the difficult task of convincing Congress to pass a national security package that will include tens of billions of dollars for Ukraine and immigration enforcement, as well as funding for Israel and other American allies.

11. Senators are racing to win support for a border deal as aid to Ukraine hangs in the balance -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate negotiators were laboring Monday to win wide support for a deal on border policy as they entered what could be a pivotal stretch for a painstakingly negotiated compromise that could open the door for Republican votes to replenish U.S. wartime aid for Ukraine.

12. Senate Republicans outline border security measures they want as a condition for aiding Ukraine -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republicans have released a sweeping set of U.S. border security proposals as a condition for sending more aid to Ukraine, laying out a draft plan to resume construction on parts of the U.S.-Mexico border wall, curtail humanitarian parole for people who cross into the United States and make it more difficult for migrants to qualify for asylum.

17. How Tennessee, other U.S. states have banned, limited, protected abortion -

The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision that had provided a constitutional right to abortion. Friday's ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. In anticipation of the decision, several states led by Democrats have taken steps to protect abortion access. The decision also sets up the potential for legal fights between the states over whether providers and those who help women obtain abortions can be sued or prosecuted.
