MEMPHIS (AP) — U.S. Attorney Edward L. Stanton III says he's leaving his post in Memphis.
A news release says Stanton will resign Feb. 28 as U.S. attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, a job he's held since August 2010. The release doesn't describe his professional plans.
President Barack Obama nominated the Memphis native in May 2015 for a U.S. District Court judgeship. The Senate never confirmed Stanton, despite support from Republican home-state Sens. Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker.
Stanton created a Civil Rights Unit in 2011. He focused on cases involving violent crime, human trafficking, child exploitation, hate crimes, health care fraud, identity theft, racketeering, drug trafficking and illegal gun possession.
Stanton previously was an attorney for FedEx.
President Donald Trump will pick Stanton's replacement. The U.S. Senate will confirm the choice.
