NASHVILLE (AP) - The National Science Foundation has awarded a $1.7 million, four-year grant to Tennessee State University for a project that will include creation of an "engineering clinic."

The university says in a news release students will be able to design and build products related to their discipline. The school says possibilities include hand-held computer games, mobile robots, computer apps and small machines.

The university says the grant is intended to revamp the curriculum and increase the graduation rate of African-American males in engineering.

College of Engineering Dean S. Keith Hargrove says Tennessee State is creating an innovative learning method that will enhance student persistence and prepare them for engineering coursework.
