Corizon, a provider of correctional health care solutions, has appointed Calvin B. Johnson, M.D., M.P.H., as its new chief medical officer.
Johnson is the former executive vice president and chief medical officer for MinSec Companies, a provider of correctional health care and other programs, as well as for Temple University Health System. He has served as assistant professor of pediatrics at Temple University School of Medicine and has been a practicing pediatrician at Temple University Children’s Medical Center.
In April 2003, Johnson was appointed as the 24th secretary of health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the youngest person to ever hold that position.
As a public speaker, Johnson has shared his expertise at local, national and international meetings and seminars, as well as having appeared many times on national and local TV shows, such as Good Morning America, Today, CBS Evening News, CNN and News Hour with Jim Lehrer.
Johnson earned a degree in chemistry at Morehouse College in Atlanta before earning his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a master of public health degree from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed his pediatric training at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
First Tennessee appoints executive vice president
First Tennessee has announced the promotion of Rita Mitchell to executive vice president. Mitchell leads the Private Client group for Middle Tennessee, which focuses on the wealth management and banking needs of business owners, professionals and other affluent individuals.
Mitchell holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and is a graduate of the Advanced Minority Business Program of the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College. She has been with First Tennessee for 10 years, all with the Private Client group.
TMA announces staff changes for 2014
The Tennessee Medical Association has announced a number of staff changes for 2014, including promotions in the divisions of government affairs, specialty society management and communications.
With the retirement of longtime Government Affairs Director Gary Zelizer, the TMA promoted Julie Griffin to director of Government Affairs and hired Katie Hitt as assistant director.
Before serving as TMA’s assistant government affairs director, Griffin was advocacy director for the American Heart Association in Nashville. She previously served on the staff of U.S. Rep. James H. Quillen and worked on campaigns for Quillen and Sen. Lamar Alexander.
Hitt came to the TMA in November after serving two years as director of government relations for the Tennessee Municipal Electric Power Association. She also held positions as legislative liaison for the Departments of Financial Institutions and Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities for the State of Tennessee.
Angela Allen and Renee Arnott have been promoted to managerial roles in contracted services to state medical specialty societies. Allen came to TMA in 2012 from the American Society of Anesthesiology in Washington, D.C., and Arnott has been with TMA since 2001 and previously served as the legal assistant in the Legal and Legislative Relations Division.
In addition, Crystal Hogg has been promoted to communications coordinator. She has been with TMA since 2008 in management services and, most recently, in communications.
Young Leaders Council graduates latest class
Young Leaders Council, a Nashville-based nonprofit organization that trains men and women between the ages of 25 to 39 to effectively participate on the boards of nonprofit agencies, has graduated Class 61.

O’Charley’s expands leadership team
American Blue Ribbon Holdings has announced the hiring of three strategic leadership positions at O’Charley’s: David Ellis as vice president of marketing, Bill Powell, senior director of culinary and
Kim Zimmerman Florence as director of learning & development.
Prior to joining O’Charley’s, Ellis served as vice president of marketing and brand communications for KFC in Louisville, KY. The previous six years he held several positions at Darden Restaurants, for both Olive Garden and Red Lobster, encompassing Brand Management, National Promotions and Menu Strategy.
Powell joins O’Charley’s from Darden Restaurants, where he served as the director of culinary development for Longhorn Steakhouse. Powell is a graduate from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY.
Zimmerman Florence previously worked for Indigo Hotels, Longhorn Steakhouse and Ted’s Montana Grill.
Habitat for Humanity names new Board
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Nashville has announced six new board members and its executive committee for 2014.
2014 new board members are: Mekesha Montgomery, Frost Brown Todd; Ray Mullins, Wells Fargo; Kimberly Neible, Caterpillar Financial Services; Eddie Pawlawski, Cumberland University; Mark Weber, formerly of Deloitte & Touche LLP; and Ridley Wills, The Wills Company.

Habitat for Humanity will begin its 2014 build season Feb. 22 with three houses in the Hallmark subdivision of Antioch. Habitat of Greater Nashville is scheduled to build 34 houses in four counties this year and recycle or renovate another 14 homes for purchase by low-income families.
Barge Waggoner hires project delivery manager
Paul Bizier, PE, BCEE has joined Barge Waggoner Sumner and Cannon as project delivery manager.
Bizier has 29 years of experience in engineering with more than 25 years of experience in process design and analysis. His experience includes design roles in dozens of wastewater treatment facilities and process systems for activated sludge and biosolids treatment.
He earned a degree in civil engineering from the University of Central Florida and a master’s in environmental engineering from Georgia Tech.
Nelson Mullins adds Catalano to firm
James P. Catalano has joined Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP in its Nashville office.
He previously was a partner at Leitner, Williams, Dooley & Napolitan, PLLC. He earned his law degree at Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.
