NASHVILLE (AP) - Vendors of a newspaper about homelessness have lost a court battle to sell to people in cars in the affluent Brentwood community.
A panel of the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday ruled that a Brentwood ordinance prohibiting sales on the street is not an unconstitutional restriction on free speech.
The court found that vendors have other ways of selling The Contributor, including going door-to-door or selling to pedestrians.
Brentwood has said that walking into a city street to sell newspapers is dangerous.
The Contributor is a Nashville-based nonprofit that aims to educate the public on homelessness while helping its vendors financially.
Vendors sell on the streets of Nashville and several surrounding municipalities, with some travelling as far as Murfreesboro, about 30 miles to the southeast.
