DVL Public Relations & Advertising has promoted Ronald Roberts to president and chief executive officer.
DVL Chairman John Van Mol announced the move and said Roberts will be responsible for strategic direction, management and oversight of all agency operations and delivering on DVL’s brand promise to provide creative excellence, service and value to its clients.
Roberts joined DVL in 1992 as an assistant account executive after having worked at The Nashville Network and Middle Tennessee State University. He is on the boards of Citizens Bank & Trust, the Nashville Sports Council, Second Harvest Food Bank, Nashville Downtown Rotary Club, Nashville Downtown Partnership and 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee. He was promoted to president and chief operating officer in 2008.
Fifth Third names new retail executive
Fifth Third Bank (Tennessee) has promoted Tina Surface to retail line of business executive for Tennessee. In this role, Surface will provide strategic direction and continue to grow the consumer bank while leading approximately 230 retail employees throughout the affiliate.
Surface’s career with Fifth Third began 22 years ago as a customer service representative while attending college. She worked her way up through several positions, including financial center manager, regional manager and market manager.
O’Charley’s promotes Mills to president
American Blue Ribbon Holdings has chosen Mickey Mills as president of O’Charley’s. Mills was previously vice president of operations for the Nashville-based casual dining chain and has been with the company since 2010.
Her appointment comes on the heels of an announced revitalization project for the 213-restaurant brand.
Prior to joining O’Charley’s, Mills spent nearly two decades with Buca di Beppo, most recently serving as senior vice president of operations at its Minneapolis, Minn., headquarters. She is a graduate of the Kellogg School of Management’s Executive Leadership Program and earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota.
Anderson appointed to Diabetes Association post
John E. Anderson, M.D., internist, has been named president, medicine & science, for the American Diabetes Association.
In this role, Anderson will serve as the principal spokesperson and advocate for the association regarding diabetes-related medicine and science issues. Additionally, he will work closely with the association’s volunteers and staff on initiatives in support of the organization’s mission during his tenure.
Anderson has more than 20 years of experience in the practice of internal medicine with a focus on the care of people with diabetes. He has given lectures and conducted workshops across the country about a variety of topics related to diabetes. He has also traveled the states of Tennessee and Kentucky talking to primary care physicians about patient management.
Anderson has been an American Diabetes Association volunteer for more than 20 years, including having served a previous term on the board of directors, as chair of the Advocacy Committee, and as a member of the Strategic Marketing work group. He was also co-chair of the association’s Health Reform Task Force, served on the Professional Practice Committee, and on the Legal Advocacy and Legislative Subcommittees of the Advocacy Committee.
In Nashville, he is serving as a Community Leadership Board member. He is also a member of the American Diabetes Association’s Pinnacle Society and Summit Circle. Anderson practices with The Frist Clinic, part of TriStar Medical Group, on the TriStar Centennial campus in Nashville.
Investment banker joins Buffkin Group
The Buffkin Group, a national search firm, has named veteran institutional investment executive Nathan Brandon a partner. He will help guide the firm’s new business development in the investment banking and financial services sectors, and a variety of recruiting searches regionally.
Brandon, who has more than 15 years experience in investment management, previously served as institutional sales representative with Fifth Third Securities. During his eight years with Fifth Third, Brandon held a variety of investment banking positions.
Prior to his move into institutional investing with Fifth Third, Brandon worked in private client wealth management, where he assisted individuals in wealth and estate planning.
McIndoe to direct United4Hope
Holly McIndoe has been named director of the Operation Andrew Group’s United4Hope school program, which helps students in the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools System (MNPS) achieve academic excellence and live healthy lifestyles.
Prior to joining the Operation Andrew Group, McIndoe was director of development and communications at Nashville Opportunities Industrial Center, where she coordinated OIC’s annual awards banquet fundraiser, managed the design and launch of a new web site, developed a sponsorship program and formed a partnership with Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools’ Community Career Centers to offer GED test preparation classes to parents and grandparents of MNPS students.
McIndoe also was the development coordinator at the Metropolitan Homelessness Commission, where she coordinated and monitored development efforts to gain funding and resources to support housing, case management, employment and outreach services with the goal of ending chronic homelessness.
Capella Healthcare names director of denials, appeals
Capella Healthcare has appointed Shawn Green, BS, MSN, RN, ACNS-BC, to a new position as director of denials and appeals. Green is responsible for the coordination of Capella’s RAC (Recovery Audit Contractors) appeals process.
Green was previously director for central appeals, quality and clinical transformation at Community Health Systems, where he developed and implemented the recovery audit appeal process for Medicare and Medicaid Part A. Green was awarded CHS’s President’s award in 2011, for outstanding achievements within the company and contributing to overall success, and again in 2012 for his successful restructuring of the centralized department.
McNeely Pigott & Fox adds media buyer
Industry veteran Kelly Maslan has joined McNeely Pigott & Fox as the firm’s first in-house media buyer.
Maslan joins the staff after working with MP&F as a media planning and buying services vendor for the past 15 years.
Maslan’s experience includes television, radio, print, outdoor and digital media-buying on the local, regional and national levels. She has extensive experience in markets from Los Angeles to Chicago to Miami. Over the years, her clients have included Kroger, Weight Watchers, Tractor Supply Company and several political campaigns.
Maslan started her career at Buntin Advertising and previously worked at Denson & Associates.
Also, the firm has hired Kellie Keyes as an associate event coordinator.
Keyes, of Knoxville, graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2011 with a degree majoring in public relations with minors in journalism/electronic media and theatre. While at UT, she won the PRSA Volunteer Chapter Student Award of Excellence and received an undergraduate research grant from the university to study differences in the lives of military and civilian students.

Michael Bolton has joined the firm as a staff member with the tax department’s state and local tax services department. He brings experience in tax specialties including individual tax returns, corporate tax, partnerships, estates and trusts.
Mariya Rybolovleva has joined the firm as a staff member with the tax services department. She has experience in individual, partnership, s corp and c corp tax returns. Originally from Novorossiysk, Russia, she holds a master’s in accounting and a bachelor’s degree of business administration from the Middle Tennessee State University.
Mary Ann Lawson joins LBMC Technologies, LLC as a technologies administrator with a specialty in small business data and office management. Her skills also include marketing, sales and a background in the health care industry. Most recently she was senior accounting coordinator and corporate card administrator for Willis North America, Inc.
Aegis Sciences promotes 3 local vice presidents
Aegis Sciences Corporation, a forensic and health care toxicology laboratories company, has announced executive changes for three members of its senior executive team:
- Beverly Cawthon has been promoted to chief operating officer
- Jeff Fisher to chief culture officer
- Dr. Timothy A. Robert to chief scientific officer.
Cawthon, who has served as Aegis’ vice president of operations and health care laboratory, will take on additional responsibilities in her new role of chief operating officer, overseeing operations of the company’s health care and forensic laboratories. Cawthon will continue to streamline production processes throughout each of Aegis’ laboratories, which are located in three of the four buildings Aegis operates from in Nashville.
Fisher, who previously served as Aegis’ vice president of finance and human resources, has been named chief culture officer. In his new role, Fisher will maintain corporate culture for all team members in Nashville and at Aegis’ locations in 37 states across the nation. Fisher joined Aegis in 2008 as director of finance and was soon named vice president of finance and human resources.
Robert, who formerly served as vice president of forensic laboratories and research and development, will take the role of chief science officer. In this role, Robert will champion and lead Aegis’ scientific research operations. He will continue to lead all research and development operations, as well as oversee all regulatory, licensure and certification credentialing and team member training.
Robert joined Aegis after serving as vice president of forensic toxicology at National Psychopharmacology Laboratories in Knoxville.
Petracek to lead VUMC cardiac surgery dept.
Michael Petracek, M.D., has been named interim chair of Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Department of Cardiac Surgery.
Petracek, professor of Clinical Cardiac Surgery, will lead the department while a national search is conducted for a successor to current chair John Byrne, M.D., who is departing on April 1 to head Cardiac Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
Before joining the VUMC faculty in 1983, he was a member of the team of surgeons at Saint Thomas Hospital who performed Nashville’s first adult heart transplant.
