Mallett

Meharry Medical College has appointed Veronica Thierry Mallett M.D., MMM, as its senior vice president for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine, effective March 2017.

Mallett is a researcher and educator, known for her work in women’s health and reducing health disparities.

In her role as senior vice president for health affairs, Mallett will be responsible for the quality of health care provided at Meharry and for the maintenance of the institution’s health service affiliations that provide exemplary training for Meharry students, residents and fellows.

As dean of the School of Medicine, she will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer of the medical school and oversee its academic programs, research efforts, curriculum, student affairs and fiscal management. Mallett also will be responsible for the academic component of residency programs.

Prior to joining Meharry, Mallett was the founding chair and professor for the department of obstetrics and gynecology at the Paul L. Foster School of Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso. She also served on the faculty of Northwestern University, Wayne State University and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

She has been recognized nationally and internationally for her work in the treatment of urinary incontinence and genital organ prolapse and research related to determining the cause of and reducing health disparities. Fluent in medical Spanish, she recently worked to develop a new medical school and health science center on the Texas/Mexico border that will address the critical physician shortage in El Paso and the surrounding community.

Mallett earned a degree in biology from Barnard College and her M.D. from Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine. She also holds a master’s degree in medical management from Carnegie Mellon University. She is board certified in both obstetrics and gynecology, and female pelvic medicine and reconstructive pelvic surgery.

Mallett replaces Marquetta L. Faulkner, M.D., who is retiring from the position. Faulkner has served the Meharry community for more than 27 years and will continue to serve the institution as a professor of medicine.

Baker Donelson has added four new associates to its Nashville office: Aaron Chaloner, Macy Cullison Climo, Hannah McSween Cole and Michael Shoptaw.

Chaloner is a member of Baker Donelson’s Intellectual Property Group and focuses his practice on intellectual property law, including all stages of intellectual property litigation, as well as counseling clients on copyright, trademark, patent and trade secret concerns.

A 2016 graduate of Oklahoma City University School of Law, Chaloner also earned his Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in 2012, giving his practice a specific focus in patent prosecution for life science and biotechnology.

Climo joins the firm’s Advocacy Department assisting clients in general business-related litigation matters. She is a 2016 graduate of Vanderbilt University School of Law, where she worked for the Vanderbilt University Journal of Transnational Law.

Cole is a member of Baker Donelson’s Commercial Transactions & Business Counseling Group, focusing her practice on a variety of transactional matters including all aspects of entity formation, mergers and acquisitions and corporate governance. A 2016 graduate of Vanderbilt University Law School, Cole worked for the Vanderbilt Law Review.

Shoptaw joins the Firm’s Real Estate and Finance Group, working on a variety of matters, including assisting clients in developing, financing and acquiring commercial real estate. He is a 2016 graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he served as a staff editor and associate cases editor of the Mississippi Law Journal.

Derrick joins Gullett Sanford Robinson & Martin

Gullett Sanford Robinson & Martin PLLC has added Heather Derrick as an attorney.

Derrick joins the firm’s real estate section as an associate. Her practice includes commercial banking and real estate transactions, drafting purchase and sale agreements, handling title matters and general business planning.

She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and her law degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law. Derrick is a Nashville native and a 2008 graduate of Harpeth Hall.

Hartness

Also, the firm has hired M. Suzanne Hartness as the firm’s chief operating officer. She replaces Maureen Wylie, the firm’s first COO, who joined in 2014 and is now relocating.

As GSRM’s COO, Hartness will oversee daily business and administrative operations and work with firm management to implement strategic initiatives. She is responsible for all support functions at the firm including finance, human resources, information technology, business development and marketing, as well as legal staff and attorney recruiting.

Before joining GSRM, Hartness served as national services executive for Ricoh Managed Services, a business unit of Ricoh USA, Inc., where she focused on revenue growth, client retention and business operations. She also served as a liaison to Middle Tennessee law firms in implementing managed document services, production print and mail services, imaging and workflow solutions, and legal document services.

She earned a degree in marketing from Mississippi State University.

Next Awards celebrates innovative entrepreneurs

Medalogix founder and CEO Dan Hogan was the top entrepreneur of 2016 and Matt Cheuvront the top young entrepreneur of 2016 at this year’s Next Awards, which are hosted annually by the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Entrepreneur Center to celebrate innovation in business.

Additionally, the Next Awards honored UBS as 2016 Entrepreneurial Partner of the Year for the company’s commitment to supporting the region’s entrepreneurial infrastructure and commitment to diversity and inclusion programs at the Entrepreneur Center.

Next Awards are given in five business categories at two stages of development – startup and market mover – in addition to nine specific awards for contributions to the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Also, for the first time, the Next Awards invited online voting for favorite finalists to determine the winner of the Nashville’s Choice Award. The winner, with more than 84,000 votes, was Groups360, a company that provides data and analytics to meeting planners and hoteliers to optimize choices for conventions, meetings and group travel. More than 300,000 online votes were cast in the inaugural Nashville’s Choice balloting.

Tennessee Chamber names board appointments

The Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry has announced 15 appointments to its 54-member board of directors for 2017. The appointments represent all three grand divisions and are appointed for a three-year term.

The Tennessee Chamber is one of Tennessee’s oldest statewide business trade associations and also serves as the Tennessee Manufacturers Association. The Tennessee Chamber board of directors is the governing body of the Tennessee Chamber and provides significant input to the Chamber’s annual legislative and policy agenda that guide the work of the business advocacy group.

Pinnacle hires Perry as SBA portfolio manager

Lin Perry has joined Pinnacle Financial Partners as an SBA portfolio manager.

Before joining Pinnacle, Perry was a credit officer and portfolio manager with First Tennessee Bank.

Prior roles included serving as a senior portfolio manager in business banking at First Tennessee and vice president of special assets at AmSouth Bank (First American National Bank).

Tennessee Orthopaedic welcomes new physician

Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance has added James H. Rubright, MD.

Rubright is a board certified, fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder.

Rubright earned his medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his general orthopaedic surgery residency training at the University of Vermont in Burlington.
