Brentwood's Vanguard Healthcare sued over nursing homes

NASHVILLE (AP) — A bankrupt Brentwood company is facing a federal lawsuit over conditions at six Tennessee nursing homes.

WPLN-FM reports (http://bit.ly/2bTGI9m) prosecutors accuse Vanguard Healthcare LLC of earning big profits while providing "grossly substandard care." They also accuse the company of fraudulently billing TennCare.

Investigators say they found forged paperwork, staff and supply shortages, and a lack of basic nursing services. That resulted in residents suffering falls, ulcers and malnutrition.

The case covers nearly 800 beds run by Vanguard in Nashville, Memphis, Murfreesboro, Shelbyville and Manchester.

The lawsuit also names Vanguard's former director of operations, Mark Miller, for failing to correct problems.

In a statement, the company denies the allegations and says it is committed to "the consistent delivery of high quality care."
