NASHVILLE (AP) - Tennessee State University is planning an 84-acre development project along the Cumberland River.

The Cumberland City at TSU project will include restaurants, retail stores, a hotel, a library and research centers, The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/2c7Jn2c) reported.

University President Glenda Glover shared the concept at a lunch gathering last week with community members and business leaders.

Metropolitan Council Member Ed Kindall said the project will be a major benefit for the community and the university. He said funding has been secured for a small portion of the project and additional money is expected to be acquired from private sources and the state.

School spokeswoman Kelli Sharpe said the project will be built in phases, although there's no definite completion date.

"Typical projects of this nature require a diverse funding package and this is something the university will pursue," Sharpe said.

The riverfront development is among improvement projects under the university's master plan.
