NASHVILLE (AP) — Republican Gov. Bill Haslam has named Deputy Education Commissioner Stephen Smith as his new senior adviser for policy and strategy.

Smith has been in charge of policy and external affairs in the state Education Department, where Haslam said he developed strong relationships with lawmakers and stakeholders around the state.

In Haslam's words: "He's a strong addition to our team, and we're excited to have him on board."

Smith succeeds Haslam adviser Will Cromer, who has been appointed chief of staff of TennCare, the state's expanded Medicaid program.

Smith had been with the Education Department since 2011. He is scheduled to begin his new job in the governor's office on Aug. 2.
