Use technology to effectively engage your employees

Print | Front Page | Email this story

If you thought we had turned a corner from the days of “Take This Job and Shove It,” think again.

A recent State of the American Workplace Report states seven in 10 U.S. workers don’t like their job. Even more disturbing, only 13 percent of employees across the globe are engaged at work.

Internal marketing efforts ensuring your employees are engaged are vital to your company’s success. Engaged employees are more likely to be motivated, to stay loyal and are more concerned with the success of the company.

Disengaged employees are not only less productive, they can actually hurt the overall quality of work.

There are many ways to keep morale up and workers engaged, but the key is making them feel connected and rewarded.

If you don’t know where to begin, consider an employee engagement survey. It can help you get a sense of what your employees are thinking and feeling.

Some of the more successful internal marketing plans involve the use of technology.

Think video.

Whether it’s interactive training videos, an employee spotlight or a profile on a business segment, video is a great way to keep your workforce educated about your company.

For example, it can often be hard for employees in different departments to see how they influence the company as a whole, but videos focused on these departments can provide a “big picture” view that educates team members and makes these employees feel more connected and appreciated.

Digital signage can go a long way in educating and connecting your team. You can use the signs to congratulate workers for a recent success or promote employee endeavors, speaking engagements, etc.

Some companies take digital signage a step further with gamification. At one company, you can compare sales between departments in true “video game” fashion on flat-screen TVs located around the office.

Each department is represented by a race car. Those cars are driven by sales. As a department gets more sales, their car pulls out ahead.

It’s a great way to motivate the team and boost morale, and most of all it’s fun.

When employees can see what their co-workers and bosses are doing, they feel more connected and get more engaged. Social news feeds can also provide HR executives with a real-time view of what’s on your employees’ minds, which they can use to create content that addresses those issues and interests, answers questions and create more engagement.

Implementing these engagement practices and understanding what your employees are thinking and feeling can go a long way in creating a more engaged, happier and essentially more productive workforce.
