July Jamboree: Summer Picnic

Oaklands Mansion, Murfreesboro will host this tradional Southern summer picnic with plenty of Southern-fried chicken and catfish, cooked on site by Uncle Bud’s and served with all the fixings. 6:30 p.m., 900 North Maney Avenue. Music on the veranda provided by The Knott Brothers Band. There will also be an open bar and Prichard’s Distillery will offer tastings to patrons. Tours of the mansion will be given as well. Free Workshop on Tennessee’s Folk Traditions

From hog killings to sorghum making to wash days to building railroads and banjos, the old ways of life in our communities have been passed down from generation to generation. Fortunately, these traditions of the past are not lost. The Tennessee State Library & Archives holds a vast collection of material about them. Carol Roberts, conservation manager at the Library & Archives, will discuss these homespun traditions during the next event in our free lecture series. Her talk, titled “Preserving Tennessee Folkways: Highlights of the Folklife Collections of the Tennessee State Library & Archives,” will be held in the Library & Archives auditorium. 9:30-11 a.m., 403 Seventh Avenue North.
