Bone McAllester Norton has added W. Justin Adams, an experienced business lawyer and litigator who represents companies and individuals in corporate, health care and employment transactions and disputes, often in the role of outside general counsel.

He also represents individuals in criminal and civil investigations.

As a business lawyer, Adams has served as outside general counsel to health care and other businesses, represented buyers and sellers in multi-million dollar health care transactions, and advised health care companies on Stark and Anti-Kickback issues.

As a litigator, he has helped businesses and individuals win victories and negotiate favorable settlements in complex commercial, employment, and regulatory disputes as well as state and federal criminal cases and government investigations.

Adams holds a J.D. from Vanderbilt University and a degree in English from Sewanee: The University of the South. Before beginning legal practice, he clerked for the Honorable Andrew J. Kleinfeld of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Before joining Bone McAllester Norton, Adams practiced 13 years with Trauger & Tuke, where he began his career and focused on corporate, health care and employment law, as well as civil litigation and criminal defense.

Flexer Law welcomes new associate Karr

Flexer Law has hired Stephan Karr as an associate attorney. Karr has litigated thousands of personal injury cases over the past 35 years here in Middle Tennessee and previously in Maryland and Washington, D.C.

Karr graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor of arts before completing his degree at Nashville School of Law in 1980. His first job after law school was with the Tennessee Board of Parole, and he has been in private practice for the past 25 years, concentrating primarily on personal injury and workers compensation cases.

He helped found the firm of Stillman, Karr and Wise in 1992, then later relocated to the Washington, D.C., area where he continued his practice of law. In 2005, he moved back to the Nashville area where he continued handling personal injury cases.

Mathews appointed global trustee of ULI

Colliers International | Nashville partner Bert Mathews has been appointed to serve as an Urban Land Institute (ULI) global trustee, the organization’s highest level of leadership.

Established in 1936, ULI has more than 38,000 members around the globe representing all aspects of land use and development disciplines. The institute’s mission is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide.

Mathews, the founding chairman of ULI’s Nashville chapter and a ULI Daniel Rose Fellow, is a member of several national technical assistance panels, and will be the voice of Nashville when collaborating with international experts during his four-year stint.

Nashville will host 3,500 elite real estate leaders at ULI’s Spring Meeting in 2019. Other future host cities for major ULI meetings include Dallas, Seattle, Los Angeles and Detroit.

Eaves appointed dean of Belmont arts program

Stephen Eaves, chair of the Division of Fine Arts and professor of music at Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, is being appointed to the position of dean for Belmont University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, effective August 1.

Eaves fills a position held for 25 years by Dr. Cynthia Curtis, who is retiring this summer.

Eaves brings to his new position more than 25 years of teaching, performing and administrative experiences. He has been recognized for outstanding teaching at three universities and influenced the path of many successful students.

As a conductor and performer, his choral ensembles have been invited to perform in prestigious national and international venues including Speyer Cathedral (Germany), St. Stephen’s Cathedral (Austria), Coventry Cathedral, Southwark Cathedral, the Clare College Chapel (Great Britain) and Carnegie Hall.

Eaves earned degrees in music education and conducting from Union University, the University of Mississippi and the University of South Carolina. He is an active member of several professional organizations including the American Choral Directors Association, National Association of Music Education, Kansas Music Educators Association, International Council of Fine Arts Deans, National Association of Schools of Music and the College Music Society.

Prior to his service at Friends, he was the director of choral activities at Henderson State University (AR). He has also served as department administrator and director of choral activities at McMurry University (TX) and Roane State College (TN).

Kristin Elarchi’s current projects have included the Wildhorse Saloon renovation. She was previously an intern architect at Earl Swensson Associates. She is a certified Construction Documents Technologist and holds a Professional Master of Architecture from Savannah College of Art & Design.

Haddix

Megan Glenn’s current projects include Franklin First United Methodist Church, Jack Daniels Motlow House and the renovation of the Belcourt Theatre. Glenn recently completed her Architectural Registration Exams and is a registered architect. She was previously an intern architect at Binkley Garcia Architecture. She is a University of Tennessee-Knoxville with a degree in architecture and minor in business.

Aaron Williams recently completed work on the Wildhorse Saloon renovation and is working on an entertainment venue at 300 Broadway. He was previously an intern architect at Walter Robbs Architects in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Williams is a graduate of Virginia Tech.

Haddix is asscociate principal at Civil Site Design Group

Joseph Haddix, PE, has been promoted to associate principal at Civil Site Design Group. Haddix was previously a project manager.

Haddix, a 2007 graduate of the University of Tennessee-Knoxville with a degree in civil engineering, started his professional career at Civil Site Design Group nine years ago.

He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers (TSPE) and the University of Tennessee Alumni Association.

Vavra joins Barge Waggoner Sumner Cannon

Barge, Waggoner, Sumner and Cannon, Inc., announces today that Mary Vavra joins the firm as senior urban planner and landscape architect.

Vavra, a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green associate, is a registered landscape architect in Tennessee and Texas. She is a founding board member of Transit Now Nashville and member of the Metro Traffic and Parking Commission, the American Institute of Certified Planners, and the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Board. She has previously been involved with the Nashville Civic Design Center and Nashville Emerging Leader Awards, where she was a Class of 2011 graduate. Vavra was recently appointed as Mobility Subcommittee chair for Mayor Megan Barry’s Livable Nashville Committee.

Prior to Barge Waggoner, Vavra was employed at Lose & Associates, Inc. She has 17 years of design experience focused on urban infill projects, transit-oriented developments, community-wide parks and recreation master plans, blueway, greenway and bikeway master plans and town planning. With each project, she works to incorporate sustainable policies and practices and has a personal passion for creating places that promote livability.

Vavra earned a degree in landscape architecture at Auburn University and a master of landscape architecture, with a focus in urban design and planning, from the University of Texas at Austin.

Nashville Area Chamber announces new staff

The Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce has announced the following new hires:

Caroline Askew has joined the Chamber’s growth team as a member relations coordinator. In her role, Askew will help the Chamber’s 2,200 members engage in Chamber programs and take advantage of services and ensure member satisfaction.

She comes to the Chamber from the American Health Lawyers Association in Washington, D.C., where she served as a program coordinator. Additionally, she was a staff associate for Pearson and Associates of Washington, D.C., a political consulting and fundraising firm.

Askew holds a degree in international studies and French from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Va.

Darden

Verlinda Darden joins the Chamber’s policy team as a policy project coordinator. She was previously with the Williamson County Chamber of Commerce, where she served as a meeting and events coordinator as well as a liaison for the Williamson County Business PAC.

In her current role, Darden will be involved in supporting the Chamber’s policy and education initiatives, including representation before the Metro Council and management of the My Future, My Way Career Exploration Fair for Metro freshmen.

Darden earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a Master’s of Public Administration degree from Tennessee State University.

Thomas Nelson names Marrs associate publisher

HarperCollins Christian Publishing has promoted Daniel Marrs to associate publisher for Thomas Nelson Bibles.

Marrs joined the Thomas Nelson team in November 2015 as senior editor for the Bibles team.

Marrs holds a doctor of philosophy in theology and ethics with minors in church history and philosophy from Baylor University. In addition, he has a master’s in theology with minors in biblical studies and philosophy from Talbot School of Theology, and a degree in English literature from Shepherd University.

His publishing experience prior to Thomas Nelson includes editorial, project management, copy-editing, proofing, and writing. He has been published by academic journals including the International Journal of Systematic Theology and Anglican Theological Review.
