SPRING HILL (AP) - A fire at the General Motors plant in Tennessee was quickly extinguished and will not affect production at the Spring Hill facility.

GM spokesman Tom Wickham said Friday that the fire in the air handling unit is believed to have been caused by a welding spark.

Wickham said the plant's fire suppression system quickly kicked in, and the building was evacuated as a precaution. The Spring Hill and Columbia fire departments responded to the scene early Friday, just after midnight, to ensure everything was safe. No one was injured.

GM has announced $938 million in investments in the Spring Hill plant this year to build a new high-efficiency engine, upgrade vehicle production and add the production of a V-8 engine for trucks. The plant makes the Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia.
