DA: Nashville councilman lied about source of bail money

NASHVILLE (AP) - Prosecutors say that Metro Nashville Councilman Loniel Greene Jr. lied in court when he got a man out of jail earlier this month.

News outlets report that the Davidson County District Attorney's Office filed a motion Thursday to revoke, increase or alter the conditions of bail set for Tavares Buchanan, who was released after Greene posted about $10,000 in bail using what Greene said was his personal money.

Buchanan was arrested on Dec. 29 on multiple charges, including aggravated kidnapping.

Prosecutors say recorded jail phone calls between Buchanan and someone using Greene's cellphone number indicate that the funds weren't Greene's and a judge can't be sure the money didn't come from criminal acts.

Greene, who has not been charged, declined to comment.

Davidson County District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Dorinda Carter says prosecutors are evaluating the case.
