NASHVILLE (AP) — A Nashville parent has filed a class-action lawsuit against an operator of charter schools in Tennessee, saying that it illegally sent a series of text messages to promote enrollment at its schools.

The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1S2OgYP) reports that Irika Skeete is the lead plaintiff of a class-action lawsuit filed in federal court Friday against RePublic Schools Nashville on behalf of people who received what the lawsuit calls "spam" text messages.

The lawsuit says the nonprofit sent four sets of mass text messages from Nov. 16 to Jan. 12, encouraging enrollment. The lawsuit says RePublic Schools Nashville violated the federal Telephone Consumer Protection Act because the recipients never consented to the messages.

RePublic Schools Nashville Regional Director Abigail Rockey says organization officials are confident they are in full compliance with the law.
