Tennessee State University hires campus police consultant

NASHVILLE (AP) - Tennessee State University has hired a consultant to review and make recommendations about the campus police department.

In a statement Tuesday, University President Glenda Glover said that August Washington will serve in the role for 60 days to help develop a policing plan and advise the university on personnel, training and organizational restructuring.

Washington's hiring is part of the university's 10-point safety enhancement plan, which was established after a deadly October shooting on campus.

Police say a dice game on Oct. 22 turned into an argument that escalated into the fatal shooting of 19-year-old Cameron Selmon. No arrests have been made in the crime.

Washington is the chief of police and associate vice chancellor at Vanderbilt University and previously served as police chief for the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
