Haslam to hear from 26 state agencies before crafting budget
NASHVILLE (AP) - Gov. Bill Haslam is kicking off a week of budget hearings at the state Capitol on Monday.
The Republican governor is scheduled to hear from 26 state agencies as he crafts his annual spending proposal that will likely top $34 billion.
The state's tourism and economic development agencies present their budget proposals on Monday, while the departments of safety and children's services will deliver their plans on Tuesday.
Primary and higher education are the highlights of Wednesday's hearings and the state's embattled Correction Department is scheduled for Thursday. The hearings conclude with a full slate of hearings on Friday, including the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
Haslam has spent the last months making the case for boosting the amount of money the state can spend on road building and maintenance projects.
