Half-staff flags honor former US Sen. Fred Thompson

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam has ordered flags over the state Capitol and all state office buildings be flown at half-staff in honor and memory of former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson.

Thompson's family said he died in Nashville on Sunday after a recurrence of lymphoma. He was 73.

Thompson wore a number of hats over the course of his life.

A Tennessee-trained lawyer, prosecutor, hard-driving Senate counsel at the Watergate hearings, movie and TV actor and even a fleeting presidential hopeful, he commanded audiences with a booming voice, outsized charisma and a 6-foot-6 frame.

Thompson was probably best known for his role on the popular NBC drama series "Law & Order."
