NASHVILLE (AP) — Administrators are heralding the Tennessee Promise scholarship program for seeming to have led to an increase in full-time enrollment at many of the state's 13 community colleges.

The Tennessean (http://tnne.ws/1XZB61t) reports that the community colleges have seen a 6 percent jump in full-time students this year on average, according to a census taken last week during the third week of classes.

Administrators say the statistic is significant because full-time students are more likely to complete their degrees.

Tennessee Promise Executive Director Mike Krause says it is too early to determine how much of the growth was driven by the scholarship program, but numerous students have embraced the opportunities of the program, now in its second year. Krause says he expects between 16,000 and 18,000 Tennessee Promise students to enroll this year.
