Chair appointed to panel reviewing name of MTSU's Forrest Hall
MURFREESBORO (AP) - A professor at Middle Tennessee State University has been appointed to lead a panel that will review the name of a campus building honoring Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest.
The university said in June that it would engage the community on the name of Forrest Hall, which houses MTSU's Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program and is named after the rebel general, slave trader and early Ku Klux Klan member.
The university announced this week that Professor Derek Frisby will be chairman of the panel, which could recommend renaming the building.
Frisby is in the global studies and cultural geography program in the College of Liberal Arts. His research has examined the Civil War and how cultures memorialize military conflict.
MTSU President Sidney McPhee said the panel will include student, faculty and community representatives.
