NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are closing higher as China's currency stabilized and crude oil prices steadied.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 69 points, or 0.4 percent, to end at 17,477 on Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed eight points to 2,091.

The Nasdaq composite rose 14 points, or 0.3 percent, to 5,048.

Nordstrom climbed after the department store chain reported earnings that were better than Wall Street analysts expected.

J.C. Penney gained after reporting a narrower loss in its second quarter due to stronger-than-expected sales.

Bond prices barely moved, keeping the 10-year Treasury yield at 2.19 percent.
