Barry, Fox in runoff for mayor

NASHVILLE (AP) — Spending $3.6 million of his own money wasn't enough for Nashville mayoral candidate Bill Freeman.

The real estate mogul and prominent fundraiser for President Barack Obama finished third in Thursday's vote to Councilwoman Megan Barry and hedge fund manager David Fox, who will face each other in a Sept. 10 runoff.

Barry told supporters she would be a "strong progressive voice" as mayor of the heavily Democratic city, while Fox called himself a centrist on social issues and a fiscal conservative.

Fox spent $1.6 million of his own money on the race, and his brother contributed another $500,000 through a super PAC. Barry loaned her effort $200,000.

Barry said the results show that voters want a candidate who will earn supporters vote rather than spending heavily.
