NASHVILLE (AP) - The Tennessee Supreme Court heard arguments on Thursday before a gallery filled with hundreds of high school girls.

It's part of an initiative called Supreme Court Advancing Legal Education for Students. In this case, the students were participants in the American Legion Auxiliary Volunteer Girls State. That's a leadership program for rising seniors that takes place on the campus of Lipscomb University in Nashville.

The girls made a well-prepared audience for the Supreme Court hearings. They had been learning about the judicial system in general, and on Wednesday a counselor discussed the specific cases with them.

After the arguments on Thursday, the attorneys stayed for a question-and-answer session. The girls gave them a standing ovation.
