NASHVILLE (AP) — A free exhibit showcasing some of the maps available at the Tennessee State Library and Archives is open in the agency's lobby in downtown Nashville through Sept. 12.

The State Library and Archives has thousands of maps, and many of them are featured in the Tennessee Virtual Archives online. To view the maps online, go to: http://tn.gov/tsla/TeVAsites/MapCollection/index.htm .

Among the maps are postal delivery maps with detail down to individual homes, churches, schools, stores, mills and cemeteries and soil survey maps that show minor topographical features such as streams, ridges and hollows.

One of the maps in the lobby exhibit shows Tennessee in 1822, just a few years after the New Madrid earthquakes created West Tennessee's Reelfoot Lake.

There are also military maps, including an online section at http://tnmap.tn.gov/civilwar/ dedicated to those from the Civil War.
