Tennessee says it is collecting unemployment overpayments
NASHVILLE (AP) - Tennessee Department of Labor officials say they are continuing to collect millions of dollars of unemployment benefits that were improperly paid out. This comes out after an audit by the state comptroller's office found that prisoners, state officials and at least one dead person were on unemployment rolls.
The comptroller's audit found that the state made overpayments of $98 million in the past six years. It estimated that a backlog of payments could balloon that figure to $171 million.
Department of Labor and Workforce Development officials disagreed, saying the estimated figure was incorrect. They also said they have collected $71.5 million of overpayments and continue to pursue the money by garnishing wages, seizing tax refunds and all other ways at their disposal.
