NASHVILLE (AP) - AT&T says it has invested $1.2 billion on its wired and wireless networks in Tennessee since 2012.

The company says it completed more than 700 wireless network upgrades last year that included new cell towers, increased capacity and upgraded cell sites to offer high-speed 4G LTE wireless internet access.

The LTE service is newly available in several towns including Crab Orchard, Dayton, Soddy Daisy and Sweetwater.

AT&T announced last year that it plans to offer gigabit-speed Internet through its U-verse service in several U.S. markets including Nashville.

The expansion in Tennessee comes amid a legislative and legal fight over municipal broadband. AT&T opposes pending legislation seeking to allow city-owned Internet providers to offer their product outside their normal service areas.

Tennessee's attorney general has also filed a legal challenge to an FCC ruling that states can't restrict where municipal broadband is offered.
