NASHVILLE(AP) - A Nashville police lieutenant who kicked a subordinate during a discussion of gun rights has resigned from the force.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, Lt. Wayne Skinner was in an office area at 8:30 a.m. on Friday with Sgt. David Humes when the two got into a heated discussion over rifles and Second Amendment issues.

Skinner kicked Humes in the chest and groin area. Humes was taken by another sergeant to General Hospital where he was checked out and then released.

Skinner, a 13-year veteran of the force, was decommissioned on Friday. He submitted his notice of resignation late Monday night.

A criminal assault investigation is ongoing.
