Court: State does not have to release execution team names

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) - The Tennessee Supreme Court says the state does not have to turn over the names of its execution team to the attorneys of death row inmates.

The ruling came as part of a lawsuit by the inmates claiming Tennessee's lethal injection and electrocution protocols are unconstitutional.

That lawsuit has been on hold for a year while the two sides have fought over whether the state had to release the names. In the meantime, several scheduled executions have been postponed.

The Tuesday ruling overturns a previous decision.

The Supreme Court also ordered the lower court to begin the trial on the constitutionality of the protocols within 120 days.
