NASHVILLE (AP) - The fate of Gov. Bill Haslam's proposal to extend health coverage to 280,000 low-income Tennesseans could be decided on Wednesday.

Senate Health Committee Chairman Rusty Crowe said the panel may vote on the measure then. He said the Insure Tennessee plan has five favorable votes and only needs one more to advance out of his committee.

Meanwhile, House Speaker Beth Harwell said Tuesday that it's not yet clear whether the governor's proposal will gain enough votes to advance in the lower chamber.

Harwell said she has offered to have her committee chairmen draw up suggestions for Haslam to renegotiate with the federal government should the proposal fail.

Harwell said her colleagues are not yet convinced Haslam's plan would offer significant cost savings for the state.
