Haslam names panel to recommend judicial candidates
NASHVILLE (AP) — Gov. Bill Haslam has named the members of an 11-person council to recommend candidates to fill judicial vacancies in Tennessee.
Fellow Republicans in the Legislature had allowed a previous version of the panel to expire before voters in November ratified a constitutional amendment to keep in place the state's current judicial selection system in which the governor fills vacancies on appeals courts and justices and judges then stand for yes-no retention votes.
Haslam created the new judicial nominating council through an executive order.
The members of the panel are Lang Wiseman, George Brown and Randy Noel of Memphis; Bradford Box of Jackson; Michelle Long and Bill Young of Nashville; Michael Spitzer of Hohenwald; Cheryl Rice and R. Culver Schmid of Knoxville; Rosemarie Hill of Chattanooga; and David Golden of Kingsport.
