People’s Law School

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands is hosting a free program that provides an overview of common civil legal issues that a person might face. Taught by Legal Aid Society attorneys and volunteer attorneys. 6 to 7 p.m., Cohn Learning Center, 4805 Park Avenue. This class will cover what you need to know about the Affordable Care Act. You will learn how the new law may help you afford health insurance, how to sign up for the insurance market place, how the law affects Medicare and how to sign up for TennCare.

Nashville Chamber North Quarterly Meeting

Chamber North is hosting a series of quarterly meetings specifically for North Nashville businesses to discuss growth and activities, including public safety and traffic/transportation. America Recycles Day Event

Sims Recycling Solutions and Nashville Downtown Partnership are hosting a collection event for old electronics. Items accepted include laptops, printers, speakers, keyboards, mice, PDAs, radios, stereos & MP3 players, DVD/CD players, VCRs, cell phones, CPUs, servers and hard drives. Items not accepted: TVs, monitors, household appliances, microwaves, toner/ink cartridges, cans and bottles. Information: 743-3091.

Battle of Franklin Re-Enactment

More than 700 re-enactors from across the country will gather to commemorate the Battle of Franklin at Eastern Flank Battlefield Park near Carnton Plantation. The battle, which was fought on Nov. 30, 1864, was one of the most terrible conflicts of the Civil War and resulted in approximately 10,000 casualties in five hours. Spectators at the re-enactment will be able to watch two separate battle scenarios unfold. Re-enactors will be encamped on site and spectators will be able shop at nearby sutler locations. There will also be food and beverages for sale. The re-enactments will begin at 2 p.m. each day. The event will involve strictly infantry and artillery, and there will be heavy and concentrated fire. Attendees should be aware that a substantial artillery barrage will be part of both days’ event. Tickets must be purchased through Oct. 31 or until they sell out. Separate tickets must be purchased for each day, and space is limited. Information: www.battleoffranklintrust.org.

This class is for people who want to learn about the terms and concepts of U.S. immigration law. The course will cover standard ways to immigrate to U.S., complexities of immigration laws, developments in the area and how to avoid potential scams.

22nd annual Fall Stand Down

Operation Stand Down Tennessee will hold its annual event providing coordinated, comprehensive services to Tennessee’s homeless veterans. The event will take place at Greater Bethel AME Church, 1300 South Street, Nashville, 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The goal of the event is to bridge many of the physical and psychological barriers between service providers and recipients. Primary emphasis is placed on the creation of a community in which homeless Veterans are treated with respect and given the opportunity to relax, interact, and form ties with peers and volunteers while receiving much needed specific services.
