Want to make big impression? Try small Nashville-area retailers
By Jeannie Naujeck
1. 1 pound of “Gas Station Blend” coffee, locally roasted by Drew’s Brews, $15; 2. Bottle opener $22; 3. Men’s ‘Willie” denim jeans for men, $250; 4. Men’s “Wilkins” denim trucker jacket $195; 5. Imogene + Willie scented candle $55
Imogene + Willie put 12 South on the world map for designer denim five years ago.
Its original American-made rigid jeans, custom-fitted to you in its showroom in a former gas station, are a nationwide pheno-menon, and the brand is so successful that owners Carrie and Matt Eddmenson have opened a second store in Portland, Oregon.
These days, Imogene + Willie carries a wider range of jean styles that are more forgiving than the original, and has expanded to tops and accessories for men and women, as well as glasses and watches from of-the-moment brands Warby Parker and Shinola.
The physical and online stores also carry one-of-a-kind vintage items, such as jewelry, linens and concert T-shirts. But the classic I+W present is a gift card for a custom jean fitting. The store is at 2601 12th Avenue South

Peter Nappi made a big splash when its converted boiler room opened in 2011 in the factory/warehouse district north of downtown.
An urban pioneer of luxury retail, its establishment here was one of the first harbingers of Nashville as “It City,” and Nappi’s distinctive, casually luxurious boots, designed in Nashville and crafted in Italy, quickly became the most sought-after footwear among the hip set.
The Nappi family has a centuries-old heritage in Italian shoe-making.
With some shoe styles going for $750 and handbags for $1,150, Peter Nappi’s goods are definitely in the “splurge” category, but their timelessly elegant style means you’ll wear them forever.

And the brand has expanded to small goods, so even if you’re only a thousand-aire you can still take home a cool leather cuff for $40, belt for $125 or something from the new Poco Pelle line of small leather goods that includes a wine tote, eyeglass case, shoe tote, pen and cigar case, wallet and cosmetic pouch.
They’re only available in store, but this is one place where going shopping is a treat, where you can gaze around the gorgeous showroom from a big leather club chair or sofa with an espresso made for you by the staff.
Sign up for the Peter Nappi mailing list, and you can even attend special in-store events with live music, food and drink. Fabulous and free – what’s more luxurious than that?
