NASHVILLE (AP) - Nashville Mayor Karl Dean says a $175 million bus rapid transit project that has attracted vocal opposition will not get underway before he leaves office next year.

The Amp would run buses in dedicated lanes, free of cars, on a 7.1-mile route. The buses would have multiple doors to allow quick boarding and exit. Although the project is designed to reduce traffic, it has faced opposition from some who believe it will do just the opposite.

The Tennessean reports (http://tnne.ws/1ry0c3W) Dean told a citizen's advisory committee on Tuesday that he will not pursue local or state funding for the Amp during his final year. He said design work and environmental impact studies need to be completed first. That leaves the fate of the project in the hands of his successor.
