Panel hears discussion on criminal justice reform
NASHVILLE (AP) - Attorneys and law enforcement officials speaking before a legislative panel examining criminal justice reform in Tennessee say the state's sentencing laws need to be reviewed.
That was part of the discussion during Monday's Senate Judiciary Study Committee hearing.
Nashville criminal defense attorney and former prosecutor David Raybin said the state should re-establish a sentencing commission, which dissolved in 1995. He said its recommendations were beneficial to lawmakers and can be again.
Safety Commissioner Bill Gibbons said outside the meeting that the governor has appointed a task force to examine the state's sentencing structure.
Gibbons, who is a co-chair of the task force, said a sentencing commission may be part of the discussion.
