Nashville soliciting ideas for city encyclopedia

Print | Front Page | Email this story

NASHVILLE (AP) - Nashville is planning an online encyclopedia of the city's history and culture, and Mayor Karl Dean's office is holding a series of community meetings to solicit ideas for the site.

According to the mayor's office, the encyclopedia's foundation will be a Nashville history created by John Egerton in 1980 to mark the city's 200th anniversary. Egerton's text contains more than 800 names of people, places and events. The goal for the encyclopedia is to have more than 1,500 entries by the time it goes live next spring.

Work on the site already is underway with the help of professional and hobbyist historians from local nonprofits, universities and government agencies.

Davidson County Historian Carole Bucy will serve as editor-in-chief.

The community meetings begin Monday and run through the end of July.
