NEW YORK (AP) — The Dow Jones industrial average has edged up to finish at a record high close.

The Dow last closed at a record two weeks ago.

The index of 30 major U.S. companies gained 18 points, or 0.1 percent, to close at 16,717 Friday, three points above its previous high.

The Standard & Poor's 500 rose three points, or 0.2 percent, to 1,923. The S&P 500 is also at a record high.

It was an overall quiet day on the stock market. Indexes spent most of the time drifting between small gains and losses.

The S&P 500 finished the month of May up 2.1 percent. That's its best month since February and the fourth monthly increase in a row.

The Nasdaq fell five points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,242.
