Poll: Most Americans say filing taxes easy

Print | Front Page | Email this story

WASHINGTON (AP) — With tax day approaching, most Americans say filling out a federal tax return isn't that hard, after all.

A new Associated Press-GfK poll found that 58 percent of Americans say filing a federal tax return is easy. Twenty-seven percent call it somewhat hard and only 11 percent very hard.

High-income people are more likely to say tax returns are hard to figure out.

The findings that most find it easy defy conventional wisdom in Washington, where politicians make careers out of promising a simpler tax system. In another blow to advocates of tax reform, few are willing to pay higher taxes in exchange for a simpler code.

The Internal Revenue Service says 90 percent of filers either pay a tax preparer or use computer software to help fill out returns.
