NASHVILLE (AP) — President Barack Obama's administration is recommending Nashville receive $27 million to help fund The Amp.

The mass transit project would be a 7.1-mile, high-speed bus line connecting east and west Nashville. The project would run buses in dedicated lanes, free of cars, and the buses would have multiple doors to allow quick boarding and exit.

The funding recommendation is part of the Obama administration's 2015 fiscal year budget proposal, which is subject to congressional approval.

Total cost of the project is $174 million, with about $75 million in federal funding needed over the next few years.

Another $35 million is needed from the state, although some leaders of the Republican-controlled Legislature have said they oppose the project. Metro's share of The Amp would be $59 million.
