Middle Tennessee getting new area code; 10-digit dialing required
NASHVILLE (AP) - A new area code is coming to Middle Tennessee. The North American Numbering Plan Administrator notified the Tennessee Regulatory Authority this week that the new area code will be 629. The TRA said it's likely to be assigned starting in spring 2015.
The TRA chose an "overlay" option for adding a new area code after learning the 615 area code would probably be exhausted by the second quarter of 2015. The authority surveyed consumers to determine whether they preferred an overlay or "split" area and said 83 percent chose overlay.
Current 615 numbers will remain as is, but 10-digit dialing will be required for local calls. The TRA said any call currently considered local will remain so, and calls that are now long distance will continue to be long distance.
