Free Legal Clinic: The Lipscomb University Institute for Law, Justice and Society is hosting a free legal advice clinic in Lipscomb University’s Swang Chapel in the Ezell Center, 5:30-8:30 p.m. Six volunteer attorneys will be available to meet with clients and discuss legal problems, answer questions, explain legal rights or review legal documents. The public can come to the clinic with questions on immigration, conflict disputes, debt issues, inheritance or tax issues, or any other type of simple legal matter. Clients should bring any papers that deal with the problem. Lawyers may only have 10 to 15 minutes to talk to each person. They will not be available to take on cases presented by clients at the clinic, and they won’t be able to go to court with clients from the clinic. Free parking is available on campus, and the Lipscomb University campus has a Metro bus stop on Belmont Boulevard, at the softball field entrance adjacent to the Ezell Center. Live on the Green

Nashville’s free concert series held at Public Square Park in front of the Metro Courthouse on six consecutive Thursdays. The series will feature:

  • Aug. 22 – Michael Franti and Spearhead with The Delta Saints and Luella and the Sun
  • Aug. 29 – Robert Randolph & The Family Band with Joe Robinson
  • Sept. 5 – Local Natives with Leagues and Lulu Mae
  • Sept. 12 – Moon Taxi with The Weeks and The Wild Feathers

Battle of Franklin Twilight Tour

American icon Ed Bearss will visit the Lotz House for a country supper on the battlefield followed by a Twilight Tour of the Battle of Franklin as a fundraiser for the foundation. Bearss, chief historian emeritus at the National Park Service and World War II veteran, was recognized by the Smithsonian in 2005 as one of the 25 people who, along with such notables as Bill Gates, Steven Spielberg and Wynton Marsalis, have immeasurably enriched society throughout the last quarter century. Bearss, now 90, has become a champion of battlefield preservation, giving tours across the nation and around the world. 5:30 p.m. Tickets: $60 per person, $425 for table of eight. Killer Nashville

Killer Nashville, held annually on the third weekend in August, was created in 2006 to bring together forensic experts, writers and fans of thrillers, mysteries and other crime literature. Publishers Weekly has named Killer Nashville and its founder Clay Stafford as one of the top 10 Nashville literary leaders playing “an essential role in defining which books become bestsellers” not only in Middle Tennessee, but also extending “beyond the city limits and into the nation’s book culture.” Hutton Hotel, Nashville. American Cornhole Association Tournament

Cornhole competitors from across the country will converge at Gaylord Opryland Resort for the hotel’s second annual American Cornhole Association (ACA) sanctioned tournament. Payout to the top 32 teams are range from $10,000 to $50. Information: playcornhole.org.

Barbecue & Bluegrass

Historic Buchanan Log House, 2910 Elm Hill Pike, Nashville, will be the beneficiary of this fundraising event. Tickets: $10 13 & older. Children 12 and younger free. Five Bluegrass Bands will be featured.

4th Annual Music City Festival & BBQ Championship

This two-day festival a barbecue competition with professional and amateur barbecue teams along 1st Ave competing for more than $25,000 in prizes and cash and the Cool Cars & Hot Bike competition on 2nd Ave. The barbecue competition is one of few that enjoys sanctioning from both the Memphis BBQ Network and the Kansas City BBQ Society. New Home and Remodeling Show

Rutherford County Home Builders’ Association is sponsoring the event at Murfreesboro’s Embassy Suites hotel. Hundreds of exhibitors will be showcasing the latest in new construction trends, as well as the finest in remodeling techniques for any upcoming home improvement project. Carnton Sunset Concert Series

This annual summer series wraps up its monthly outdoor concerts on the lawn of Carnton Plantation with Bad Dog, featuring classic rock from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. Advance tickets are $10 for adults (13+) or $12 at the gate. Children 6-12 are $5 each, and children 5 and younger are free. Tickets are available at Carnton and The Carter House. All concerts are from 6-8 p.m., with gates opening at 4:30 p.m. Wrist bands will be issued for re-entry, and parking is free. Patrons are encouraged to bring lounging items such as lawn chairs or blankets. Guests may bring their own food and drink, but both will also be available for purchase.

Launch Tennessee Statewide Demo Day

The 20 top startup companies from Tennessee’s regional accelerator programs will gather in Nashville’s Bridge Building to pitch their businesses. At the conclusion, 10 startups will be crowned as The TENN and embark on a new master accelerator program, sponsored by Launch Tennessee (LaunchTN) and the Blackstone Charitable Foundation, that allows them to compress several years worth of development into a few months. CEO Roundtables: What’s all the buzz about?

The CEO Roundtable program is one of the longest-running Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce programs.   • Tennessee Sen. Jim Tracy
  • Chris Ramsey, director of the Office of Health Care Reform for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee
  • Alex Tolbert, founder of Bernard Health, the country’s first independent health care retail store.
