LOS ANGELES (AP) — A lawyer suing Toyota over the death of a California woman has told a jury he will ask for $20 million in damages.

In his opening statement Thursday, the lawyer for the family of Noriko Uno said Toyota was at fault for her death because the company failed to install a brake override safety system in the 2006 model Camry she was driving.

The plaintiffs contend Uno died when her Toyota Camry suddenly accelerated and crashed despite her efforts to stop.

The suit against Toyota Motor Corp., claims the automaker should be held liable for her death. Hers is the first so-called "bellwether" case to go to trial in state courts.

Toyota recalled millions of vehicles worldwide after reports from drivers that some of its vehicles were surging unexpectedly.
