NASHVILLE (AP) - A recent report on the well-being of children in Tennessee shows the state has improved in key areas despite a drop in its ranking.

The Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth released the annual Annie E. Casey Foundation's Kids Count report on Monday.

Compared to other states, Tennessee ranks 39th when it comes to overall child well-being, a drop from last year's ranking of 36th.

However, the state improved in the areas of high school students who don't graduate on time and teen birth rate.

The percentage of students not graduating on time dropped from 29 percent to 20 percent, and the teen birth rate went from 55 births per 1,000 to 43.

Commission executive director Linda O'Neal says the agency is committed to a range of strategies aimed at improving outcomes for children.
