Carr joins bid to oust DesJarlais in GOP primary
MURFREESBORO (AP) - State Rep. Joe Carr of Murfreesboro is joining the race to oust embattled U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais in next year's Republican primary.
Carr joins state Sen. Jim Tracy of Shelbyville, who declared his candidacy in January.
DesJarlais, a Jasper physician, has struggled to raise money since winning re-election last year amid revelations he dated patients and once advised a mistress to seek an abortion.
Carr, whose exploratory committee raised about $200,000 in the first quarter of the year, said his campaign will focus on an opposition to President Barack Obama's health care law and support for gun rights and tighter enforcement of immigration laws.
Tracy's campaign disclosures filed with the Federal Election Commission last month said he raised more than $436,485 in the first quarter, and DesJarlais reported raising $104,532.
