State Legislature
Bill would increase fine for not wearing seat belt
NASHVILLE (AP) - Legislation that would increase the fine for not wearing a seat belt is scheduled to be heard by lawmakers next week.
Versions of the bill were to be heard in the Senate Finance Committee and the House Transportation Committee on Tuesday. However, they were delayed in each committee until next Tuesday.
Currently the penalty for not wearing a seat belt is $10. Under this proposal, the fine would be $50.
Sponsors say the measure is simply to encourage people to buckle up.
