14 proposals submitted for judicial redistricting

NASHVILLE (AP) - Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey has received 14 proposals for how to redraw Tennessee's judicial districts.

The Blountville Republican, who is expected to unveil his proposal for new judicial districts early next week, on Friday praised the involvement of groups like the Tennessee Bar Association and the Public Defenders Association.

But he expressed disappointment that leaders of associations representing judges and prosecutors refused to participate.

Tennessee currently has 31 judicial districts, which were last redrawn in 1984. Ramsey said new districts should reflect demographic changes over the last three decades.

The Tennessee Trial Judges Association in a letter to Ramsey on Thursday raised concerns that the redistricting would be costly, disrupt caseloads and cause too many rural counties to be lumped together.
